The Chevrolet SS Is Going Out With A Bang (Hopefully)

As we’ve mentioned in the past, Australia’s Holden Commodore will be no longer, just like its sister car, the Chevy SS... Next year marks the end of production for the vehicles (and Holden’s performance line, HSV, as an entirety) but the brand plans to end with quite the last hurrah.

Only 250 units of HSV’s last product- the GTS-R W1- will be produced. And this will be the fastest, loudest, and most expensive car Australia has yet to see. The W1s will start off at Holden’s Elizabeth plant as standard Commodores and then shipped to HSV’s Clayton shop. Here they will be totally upgraded- LS9 engine, Supashock dampers and all. As you might be too, we're really hoping the SS will be getting the same ZR1 treatment.

The W1s will come with AP Racing steel brakes and a six-speed manual transmission… If you haven’t caught on, this car is basically a four-door Corvette ZR1. Though the power figures are unknown at this point, we think there’s pretty good chance the GTS-R W1 will produce even more than the ZR1’s 638 horsepower and 604 lb.-ft of torque.

Sounds pretty awesome, if you ask us.

Chevy Truck Enthusiast? You'll Love Chevy's New Truck Legends Program

If you’re a Memphis Chevy Truck enthusiast, you’ll love this. On Wednesday, Chevrolet launched “Truck Legends”, a program that recognizes and honors dedicated Chevy truck owners who have more than 100,000 miles on their trucks or have purchased or leased more than one new Chevy truck in their lifetime. Though the program is currently only open to Texas residents, the brand says it be rolling out nationwide in 2017.

“We know there is a story behind every mile, every truck and every customer,” stated Chevrolet truck marketing director, Sandor Piszar. “The Truck Legends program is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to our loyal customers and curating some of their stories.” He added “In 2018 we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of our first Chevrolet truck, and that event would not be complete without recognizing the customers who have made Chevrolet part of the fabric of America. The stories from our Truck Legends will play a key part in celebrating the next hundred years of Chevrolet trucks.”

In becoming a Truck Legends member, there will be many benefits that come along. Exclusive Truck Legends memorabilia will be given out, like hats and decals and dealerships that choose to participate in the program may offer other benefits, like free car washes or discounts on oil changes. Additionally, Chevrolet will periodically offer Truck Legends members once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, ranging from front-row seats at a concert to getting a sneak peek at new Chevrolet models.

Trucks eligible for the program include:
  • Silverado and Silverado HD (and past C/K trucks)
  • Colorado (and past S-10 trucks)
  • Tahoe
  • Suburban
  • Avalanche
When the program rolls out to the rest of the nation, owners can sign up at ChevyTruckLegends.com!

Military Vehicle Based On Chevy Colorado Is In The Works

This past week, both General Motors and the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) announced a military spec vehicle- based on the Chevrolet Colorado and powered by hydrogen fuel cells- is in the works. Not sure what that means? A hydrogen fuel cell is a fuel cell that uses both oxygen and hydrogen as fuel to produce electricity and water. The electricity produced is used to power the vehicle and the water is either ejected from the vehicle or captured for other use.

Throughout the last decade, there has been a push for electric vehicles throughout the entire automotive industry due to zero tailpipe emissions and cheaper operation. However, they’re especially significant in the military segment. A fuel-cell vehicle is quiet and its electric motor offers high torque-power delivered almost immediately to the wheels. This allows the vehicle to move through rough terrain quietly. When it comes to charging, a fuel-cell vehicle does not require a station- just a supply of hydrogen. It also has the ability to be used as an electric generator and source of water.

The military has not officially stated whether or not they will use this type of vehicle in active duty, however GM did state that a commercially viable fuel-cell vehicle could be headed this way in the 2020 time frame.

The Colorado-based fuel-cell vehicle will be revealed this October at the Association of the United States Army fall meeting in Washington, D.C.

Guess we’ll see how it goes! Maybe some of this technology will end up on future Chevrolet models!

In the meantime, be sure to stop by Chuck Hutton Chevrolet to check out our current Chevrolet lineup!
