Chevy Silverado HD Finishes at Top of Its Class In J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study

With spring right around the corner and many buyers excited for what 2021 has in store, it is an opportune time to closely look into the achievements of models you may be interested in. Every time the Chevy Silverado attains another achievement, we are the first to notice. This past week our prized 2021 Chevy Silverado HD finished at the very top of the Large Heavy Duty Pickup segment during the J.D. Power Dependability Study.

This study ranks automaker and models based on the scored track record of their reliability. Vehicles that have been owned for three years are surveyed and the owner notates in detail what type of problems they have experienced. The overall ranking is then based on what types of difficulty were experienced per 100 vehicles on the road, designating each one with a “PP100” rating. The study asks respondents about 177 very specific vehicle problems in areas such as powertrain, overall driving experience, and entertainment satisfaction.

The Chevy Silverado was the only vehicle that performed at or above the segment average during the recent study and fared much better than its relative in the form of the GMC Sierra HD. Mechanical systems in trucks are seeing much improvement overall, but the brands that did not do as well as Chevy were experiencing the pitfalls of multiple failures in regards to the engine and on-board safety features. Taking a look at some of the other popular studies J.D. Power had performed on the Silverado, there's another very key area where it ranked as “Best”: resale, where lower depreciation makes for a much better rating.

Another category that makes us prouder than ever here at Chuck Hutton of Memphis that J.D. Power deemed as “Great” was the dealership experience. Facilities, customer service, and the quality of work during repair and scheduled maintenance were all taken into consideration. Selecting the Double Cab Work Truck from our loyal and caring dealership provides you with Bluetooth integration, power locks, adjustable steering wheel, split/ folding seats, the tire pressure monitoring system, 4-wheel disc brakes, and daytime running lights. The entry-level WT gains steering wheel mounted controls, a 3-section split-bench seat, and a driver information display.

Models that are equipped with a 2.7-liter engine can tow up to 2,500 more pounds this year, and turbodiesel models see a 1,900-pound gain. The Convenience Package II featured on the RST and LT trims is where the step up leaves you with premium features to enjoy on during the drive in the form of a 7-speaker Bose audio system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you opt for the same addition on the LTZ, you score all of those features plus navigation and wireless device charging, with the High Country receiving all of these glitzy and useful goodies as standard.

Chevy Silverado 2500 HD Hailed as “Historically Comfortable and Impressive” by Automotive Minute

When it comes to pure domination in the truck realm and knowing full well that the brand you represent has the most to offer, Automotive Map Editor Eileen Falkenberg gets it right when she says that “We already know the numbers”. The Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, when fully equipped with the 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel engine, can tow up to 35,000 pounds. Since it displays such prowess in this department, the latest feature also ran in the Atlanta Business Chronicle poses the question regarding how it is as a daily driver.

After being delivered and sitting in the driveway, Eileen reflected on just how huge and imposing the Silverado looked, and took an extra liking to the large grille that faces a hood taller than the driver. She claims after testing that the truck's seats are amazingly comfortable even after 600 miles at a time, which is about the range of the 2500 when outfitted with the Duramax for engine choice. Even though the truck felt pleasantly enormous, it was easy for her to keep between the lanes and driving the truck on the highway was not a tiring chore in the least.

Even though all of us here at Chuck Hutton Chevy of Memphis agree that you feel the size of the Silverado when you are behind the wheel, the truck remains easy to maneuver and nimble. This particular drive took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, where wide lanes and available parking are pretty scarce. Still, when the crew did find a suitable parking spot, the truck's helpful numerous camera angles and wide mirrors made it a snap to back into a spot and complete the sometimes-dreaded parallel parking task. The engine here was marked down as just as competent as the handling, and the truck delivered around 22 mpg in mixed traffic situations.
The crew completed idling in slow East Coast traffic, patches where high speed was accessible, and the usual “merge mania” back and forth of the pre-rush hour to average out their MPG stat. Some of the top-ranked reviewers on Cars.com had high praise for features like the spacious interior and excellent legroom, and a ride that simply feels solid every time it hits the road for a new journey. A few have claimed that “The max trailering package seals the deal”, and that the edition of a trim with leather will add a very noticeable upper-end quality every single time you step up and in. The folks on duty at the esteemed Roadshow blog also claimed during the fall that this is THE truck for you if you are after unrefined comfort and “an efficient torque monster”!

2020 Chevy Silverado HD Dominates Dodge Ram Heavy Duty in 18,000 – Lb. Towing Showdown

“The Great Pickup War” is one that is absolutely raging, and is completely affecting all brands and segments of the entire industry! We fully acknowledge here at Chuck Hutton Chevy of Memphis that much of Ford, Chevy, and Ram's assets have all been put to use heavily to roll out bigger and badder TV ads, and make sure that customers are aware of the features, upgrades, and stats such as towing capability. As we happily pointed out during our recent introduction of the 2020 Silverado HD, it can out-accelerate the new Ram Heavy Duty truck, even with the burden of an 18,000 – pound trailer in tow.

This data presented by those on staff at “The Drive” blog lays out the fact that a Silverado 3500 DRW accelerates faster from 0 to 60, 25 to 60, and 40 to 60 miles per hour than a Cummins – powered Ram 3500 DRW. Off the bat, the Ram boasts a higher torque figure than the Silverado, which one would think should make it more capable at

towing. The Silverado offers 910 lb- ft of torque on tap, while the Ram is the overall winner with 1,000 lb – ft. Despite the differences in actual torque, the Silverado claims a maximum towing capacity of 35,500 pounds, while the Ram is rated at 35,100.

Heavily upgraded drive-line components help the Silverado achieve maximum torque while in first gear, without the need to actually electronically limit torque. Both the Chevy and the Ram were compared at the Milford Proving Grounds, where both had an 18,000 – pound trailer attached, and then performed the acceleration tests. The Silverado got to 60 mph 2.6 – seconds quicker than the Ram by means of the more powerful high-output diesel engine.

More powerful than ever and jam-packed with smart technology, the all-new 2020 Silverado HD is designed and engineered from the ground up to take on the most demanding and rugged jobs. Built on the solid foundation of high-strength steel, this is the truck that offers up massive strength to handle the most daunting of tasks. It is thoroughly engineered with seven different types of steel, which each gauge having been very carefully scrutinized and selected to maximize capability for a truck that arrives off the lot poised to produce years of hard work. This amazing truck also offers an Integrated Power Takeoff Package on the Allison transmission and dual alternators on both engine options, making it easier to power commercial-grade accessories for the grind!

CarBuzz.com Details Silverado's Six-function MultiPro Tailgate Addition

As spring has most definitely found its way to Tennessee, all of us on staff here at Chuck Hutton are fully immersed in the trenches for what has been an “all-out truck war” for quite some time now! The heavy-duty aspects of the lineup are absolutely included, as we know that the Ford F-150 and the Dodge Ram are poised and ready in their respective defensive perches. Every single innovative feature that customers find useful is of help, and we have all observed that the 2020 GMC Sierra HD's brandishing of the six-function MultiPro Tailgate will now come standard on the SLT, AT4, and Denali models.

So it's not surprising that many reached out to us wondering if the new Silverado HD will have this very useful feature, and courtesy of the folks on staff at the CarBuzz blog, we found out that it will! According to GM Authority, they had recently spied a camouflaged 2020 Silverado HD prototype, and after taking an extra-close look, the MultiPro tailgate was on board. At a close look behind the prototype's tarp, the MultiPro's cut lines were visible, and GM Authority also has reason to believe that the MultiPro tailgate will also become an option for the light-duty Silverado 1500, though it is not known exactly when.

It definitely makes quite a bit of sense for the Silverado 1500 to get this resource for the 2020 model lineup, since the Ram 1500 now has a trick tailgate of its own, and we can be pretty sure that Ford will have its own version to play a hefty part in the battle. This MultiPro tailgate has undergone more validation and thorough testing than any tailgate in GM's history, and is just one of many new advancements that helps a hard day on the ranch or job site that much easier.

You can open the primary gate from inside the truck or from a button using the key fob's power release, and while it is open the load stop helps prevent cargo from unexpectedly sliding out of the box. The inner gate also folds into a large step providing easy entry and exit from the box, and boasts a hefty maximum weight capacity of 375 pounds. The opened inner gate also provides a work surface as well as second-tier loading, and the MultiPro tailgate is operated via a touchpad with two buttons, which is located at the center of the tailgate just above the GMC logo. The bottom button drops the entire tailgate, while the top button provides release for the upper part of the tailgate.

Interestingly enough, this idea began from a pool that was akin to “Shark Tank:” the team on duty was tasked by the chief engineers to come up with a new and innovative way to address a customer need. What they began with was a split tailgate completely in half, and it eventually evolved into today's version with the extra step. Making the final decision to not sacrifice a thing in terms of functionality, the new tailgate was born. It is for sure another feature that will make the 2020 Silverado that much more enticing, we were excited to see that it will be a part of next year's hefty and aggro hauling machine!

Boston.com Covers Towing Ability + Trailering Features On The 2020 Silverado HD

Christian Wardlaw of the New York Daily News wrote a feature this past week on the coming 2020 Chevy Silverado HD, and the exciting changes made to the towing capacity and payload rating. Everyone on staff here at Chuck Hutton grinned a little bit in agreement when he playfully stated that many customers who buy a light-duty truck would never need to tow or haul anything nearly as hefty as their vehicles can actually handle. While it's true that many customers of today buy a half-ton truck because they want one instead of truly need one, the push to up the figures for ratings has always been a ferocious one!

The maximum towing and payload 'arms race' within the heavy-duty segment truly matters to many riggers, ranchers, and other hard-working truck owners, and that's why Chevy says it is working to increase capacity and payload rating for future models. The 2020's styling is very unique to this truck: only the roof panel is shared between the Silverado HD and 1500, and Christian was particularly drawn to the blunt and forceful appearance it has. There are bed steps just ahead of the rear wheels, situated there to make any fifth-wheel trailering tasks a bit easier.

Selection of higher trim levels provides the addition of extra chrome, and what appears to be LED forward lighting adds some good depth to the truck's appearance, along with the integrated air intake. You can check out photos here that provide a clear idea of what the upcoming model will look like, and be amazed at the raw and menacing stance the truck evokes, while poised to haul, tow, and conquer various obstacles that a day's work may throw in its path. As far as what will be placed under the hood, there are currently vague details about a standard direct-injected gasoline engine paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission, as well as the option of the more muscular turbo-diesel V8, which cranks out 910 lb-ft of torque.

The staff on duty at Motor Trend claims in a feature found here about next year's Silverado that on board may be a small-block derived 6.6-liter gas engine, producing 401 horsepower, and 464 lb-ft of torque, with the towing rating hovering at around 18,200 pounds, and payload around 7,630 pounds. This particular blog does a great job of highlighting what Chevy truly wants as a brand: for our prized truck line to be easiest to live with: easy to load, to hook a trailer to, and to maneuver the trailer with. For the task of loading, there's the industry's only power-up-and-down tailgate, new bedsteps at the front of the bed, and a lift-in height that is now dropped by 0.9 inch. There's also an available 120-volt outlet, 12 tie-down rings, and the option to add nine very useful accessory tie-downs.

The Advanced Trailering System on board puts to use accessory cameras that are connected by coaxial cable to offer up to 15 camera views. Among these are the bull-view hovering in front of the hood, bed and bumper hitch views, shots of tires while you are making turns, and the revolutionary “transparent trailer” view that shows the entire scope of the rear-view as if the trailer was invisible. The system even has the ability to monitor the pressure and temperature of up to six tires, and is able to be programmed to compile the all-important pre-trip checklist!
