Top-Trim 2021 Suburban High Country is “The best driving Suburban ever made”, Instills First-Rate Confidence

Humorously claiming that "a 1938 Suburban functioned about as well on the road as a fish in Death Valley," Clayton Seams of Driving.com reflected on the history and evolution of our prized Chevy Suburban. The lower gears wailed at high speeds, and the interior was about as bare-bones as it gets. Back then, the Suburban was treated as a "covered truck" and used only for "truck things". Cars, on the other hand, were used for "car things". Today, the newest 12th-generation Suburban has traded its rear axle for a rear suspension that has much softer and better handling characteristics.

Clayton thought that a thorough test drive was now in order, and acquired a top-trim High Country model with four-wheel drive. They sourced their power for the drive with a 6.2-Liter V8 that cranks out 428 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. As soon as he got in and drove away, Clayton claimed that it was the best-driving Suburban ever made. It glides over rough pavement well and sticks to corners as a much smaller model would, and braking is completed with 100% confidence.

The Magnetic Ride Control is what allows this large-sized Suburban to handle corners like a car, and the automatic setting for the 4WD allows you to have the power sent to the forward axles whenever it's needed without switching it off and on repeatedly. The front seats are adjustable in every way imaginable, and “real-life-sized” grownups can ride very comfortably in all three rows of seats. For performance in the form of a luxury wagon, the Suburban was ranked by the Driving.Ca crew as “flawless”, and entertainment options in rear rows, soft leather seats, and seemingly silent highway ride make it the ultimate vehicle for carrying lots of stuff as well as your favorite passengers.

With a very quick-reacting 10-speed automatic and new diesel offered on several trims, this is the perfect time to become well-acquainted with a vehicle that has worn so many different hats for so many successful years. 2.3 inches of legroom have been gained over its previous generation, and the second-row seats also have 5.5 inches of travel to slide for ideal accommodation. Sport and Off-Road driving modes are new for 2021, joining the Tow and Haul options and providing the ability to make the ride more firm and offer better ground clearance.

One of the coolest features of the new Suburban is the by-wire brake system, which employs an electric motor minus a direct connection between the pedal and master cylinder. The current redesign also moves the control of the transmission from a conventional column shifter to a set of push-buttons to the right of the steering wheel, which is more convenient right at first touch.
