New 2016 Chevy Sonics Named IIHS Top Safety Pick

The 2016 Sonic was recently named an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick for the new year. In order to be among the IIHS’s Top Safety Picks, a vehicle must score a “good” — the highest rating — in each of the crashworthiness categories as well as a basic rating for front crash prevention.

The crashworthiness categories consist of small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints and seats. This marks the second straight model year that the Chevy Sonic has earned a good rating across the board.

The IIHS implemented stricter criteria for this year. Previously, the best cars could score an acceptable rating on the small-front overlap crash test and still earn the top honor.

“We asked auto manufacturers to do more this year to qualify for our safety awards, and they delivered,” Adrian Lund, IIHS president, said.

Safety features on the 2016 Chevrolet Sonic include:
—Side airbags: front and rear head curtain airbags and front and rear seat-mounted torso airbags
—Rollover sensor: designed to deploy the side curtain airbags in the event of an impending rollover
—Driver and front passenger knee airbags: separate airbags in the lower instrument panel designed to minimize knee injuries in frontal crashes
—Electronic stability control
—Antilock brakes
—Daytime running lights
